The Deverells In The 1940 Census
I recently posted about where the Deverell’s lived in 1940. Today, I will supplement that info with their page from the 1940 US Census.
The family was from Alabama…and Billy was the baby of 4 children. He was the only kid not born in Alabama, but rather California. I don’t know if the house at the aforementioned post was a duplex or just a big house but they had another family living with them. The Hanks’s. They were also all born in Alabama, including their youngest kid who was 2.5 months old.
Billy’s dad, Andrew, was a “pipe moulder” and his industry was “Iron Pipe Manufacturing”. Andy’s salary in 1940 for 52 weeks worked was $1,800… or, $35 a week. $7 a day… 90 cents an hour.
And just for kicks, here’s Ron’s dad on the 1940 US Census. Arlin was from the VERY southeast corner of Missouri, close to Arkansas. Ron was born while Arlin was in the USAF in 1944, so maybe that explains why Ron was born in Illinois. His mother was from there and living with family at the time.
During the year 1940, Arlin was living with an older cousin and working as a farm laborer. He made $120 that year. Shit, no wonder he joined the USAF.
