1982 News Article: Porno Actor On Trial

This article from February 2, 1982 has some great stuff in it, like observations made in the courtroom about Susan Launius during the preliminary trial of John Holmes. This is just the preliminary trial, to see if there is sufficient evidence to bring JH to trial. There was indeed, and the trial would occur 3-4 months later.

I often like to think back to what I was doing during certain dates and events that span the Wonderland saga. In February of 1982, I was in 6th grade. It seems like yesterday.

From this article, we learn:

  • After Detective Frank Tomlinson testified about what Holmes told him about being there the night of the murders, the judge announced there was sufficient evidence to go to trial.
  • Holmes still had a beard, and shook his head in denial when Tomlinson was on the witness stand.
  • John showed no emotion when Susan Launius took the stand to testify. During the real trial in June, he did the same thing and did not make eye contact.
  • The article again confirms that Susan was 29 at the time, not 25, as is so often stated.
  • Susan had to stand up to get a better look at Holmes while she was on the witness stand. She did not remember seeing him at the house.
  • This is the first time we hear that Holmes told the detective that “Nash is the most evil man I have ever met…”. Not too evil though, because after police released John from protective custody in July, 1981, he was spotted at Nash’s house, which was under police surveillance.
  • Susan is described as “the dark-haired young woman”. In another article from the murder trial, it said that Susan got around with a cane, and had to use it to walk to the witness stand due to partial paralysis in her left leg. They also note the loss of a finger.
