The Old Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital

David Lind passed away in 1995 at age 55. His place of death was the old Santa Rosa Community Hospital. While still there, it is abandoned and looks pretty spooky. David’s immediate cause of death was a heart attack due to days of internal bleeding due to years of drug abuse. According to the death certificate, prior to his death David last worked for a year in the printing industry as a laborer. He was married at the time of his death.

I’m sure I remember reading somewhere on your blog that he had a kid.. was that true?

I believe had an estranged daughter from an early marriage in the 60s.

Hi G, your full name comes up because that’s the profile name of your own blog I think.

Yeah, I just figured it out. Disregard the email I just sent you. I don’t have a blog. WordPress made me sign up to ‘like’ your posts or rate them with stars. I’ll see if I can change my name on it. Thanks. I’m ignorant to blog sites. I don’t use them.

Gayle had trouble posting, but she wanted to say:
The idea of abandoned hospitals always intrigued me…so creepy! This one especially knowing Lind died there. Too bad it’s a 5 hour drive away from me. Sonoma County is beautiful.

Thanks G! Contrary to popular belief, Lind was never in witness protection. He was on the run, just like Tracy and Holmes…that whole paranoia… but Holmes was running from the law, not Nash. And Lind couldn’t be a real member of a biker gang. He just wasn’t cut from the same cloth as guys like that, he used intravenous drugs-which was a no-no (biker gangs have ethics?), and probably wasn’t seen as trustworthy, having failed at impressing these gangs I’m told. A true pariah even before Wonderland, he would remain one after as well. He led a nomad-like existence, estranged from even his own immediate family. Not even mentioned in his own mother’s obituary.

Thanks, I will use my computer and not my phone to leave comments.

I never understood that mentality of ‘no IV drug use’ that the bikers have. They do far worse. I guess they do see everything else they do as being ethical…crazy!

        • John 6:11 am on January 26, 2016 Permalink

and Holmes wasn’t mentioned in Sharon’s obit either.

        • Ken 9:29 am on January 28, 2016 Permalink

I would imagine it wold be less a matter of ethics than a matter of them knowing that IV drug users are completely unreliable and untrustworthy.

Imagine yourself being involved in a gang of people commiting crimes on an ongoing basis and one of your accomplises being an IV drug addict that the police could merely arrest and put through withdrawal to get him to flip on the entire gang…

I don’t think that Holmes was listed in his mother Mary’s obituary either when she died several years back in her 90’s..

      • localarts 2:59 pm on February 1, 2016 Permalink | Reply

You’re right, Ken. Holmes was left out of his mothers obit. There was a discussion about it on this blog some time ago. A few of the posters seemed a little upset Holmes was never mentioned but then again, it wasn’t their family name that had to bear the shame and humiliation for his actions either.

David Lind’s Cousin Fills In Some Gaps

I reached out to his cousin, whom I found online. This is what she sent me. I won’t post the photo of Dave’s mom, but she is a nice looking woman. Dave was married, but I have only found public record of a divorce, which was in the late 60s or early 70s.

    Read on… (Thanks Dev!)

My family has tried to stay away from the whole incident. I know that David’s mother, who was my grandfather’s sister, was very embarrassed by the whole thing. I, of course, am more removed, so when my mother told me about it, I was quite fascinated, and was living in LA, so of course I went to visit the house.

I also met Dawn a few years ago, and told her I was related to David. She was very sweet.  She signed her book for me, which I still need to get around to reading…..did you read it?

My mom has told me that he was not very involved with the family, but when he was around he was a really fun person, very much a ladies’ man, and there was always a feeling of danger when he was around.  He always had his motorcycle with him.  I don’t know if he was actually a part of a Hell’s Angels chapter or not, but I am sure he knew them.  He did have a wife and two children, I believe.  I think he was divorced, I never met any of them, I think they live in Northern California.

I am attaching a picture of his mother, she is the most beautiful woman.  David had a younger brother who also has distanced himself from our family, he is in the Pacific Northwest, I think, with his family.  David’s real father left when he was fairly young, and his mother found another man who was a soldier in WW2, and was very stable and loving. So any darkness that David inherited I would say came from his father, whoever he was.  I think we only have one photo of him.

I am fascinated by this. Have always wanted to know more about David Lind. Thank you so much for sharing.

John scores another exclusive. Oddly the part I find most fascinating is that this gal got Dawn to sign her book but has not gotten around to reading it.

Would be nice to hear what David’s kids would have to say about his years both before and after 1981, as we don’t seem to know much about him. Maybe they would have David’s appearance with Morton Downey Jr. on a VCR tape.

A DVD version of Dave’s appearance on that show would make a great Christmas gift!!

From what has been said about that episode… Dave was about to permanently relocate that cigarette into Mort’s right nostril.

I’m sure Mort knew better than to blow cigarette smoke in Dave’s face as he had so many of his other guest. Would really to see this episode.

    Is This David Lind?

In 1961, a kid named David Lind graduated from Lodi High School. Lodi is located between Sacramento and Stockton, California in the Central Valley.

The age is about right, although I have seen three different birth years for David Clay Lind in my research. Who the heck knows.

What do you think? Here are the few photos of him, along with the ’61 senior yearbook photo. Also, if he was in the Aryan Brotherhood, then Lodi is the place to foster those feelings. To this day, the city is still less than 1% black people by population.

Look at the eyes, eyebrows and the nose, bridge of the nose. Now compare the young Lind’s leftside cheekbone to that of the old, grizzled Lind on the right there… Hmmm. That ear too. WTF!

Call me crazy, but that's him!

Call me crazy, but that could be him.

Wow! My opinion is yes! The bone structure and they eyes are the same.

      • John 12:34 pm on July 24, 2013 Permalink | Reply

The way the bridge of the nose goes down and meets the same looking nostrils. Geez, it’s uncanny!

It is! I would put money on it that this is indeed David Lind once upon a time.

And I wouldn’t put it past Dave to have graduated when he was 20 or so…LOL. And, he looks like a high school bully to me.

        • dreamweaverjenn 2:21 pm on July 24, 2013 Permalink

Yeah, I was feeling he looks a little dark there and maybe a loner. I would love to talk to someone who knew him but I do feel he was a loner. I can just hear his mom now “Davey! Put on that nice suit and tie and comb your hair nice for your senior picture! One day people are going to find this and you want them to see how handsome you are!” lol This of course was before he got in touch with his inner bad ass.

(Tammy had posted that he died of overdose in 1995)

Hello Tammy My name is Betsy I have a daughter who happens to be the granddaughter of David Lind and i am also in touch with his other daughter. Can we get pictures of him? we have no information none of his belongings, nothing. We would love to get in touch with you . where is Bernice, NaNa B ? are u the daughter of Bennett or related to Danny?

While we’re posting stuff about Dave… I have to include this. I wish he would have taken Barbara with him that night. Who knows, maybe Barbara was sick of his shit and told him to Get Lost?

“She was very pretty and a blonde. I don’t have any photos but will check with fam and see if they have any that I can send. Not sure what the response will be. Her death was kind of hush hush (for obvious reasons details were not discussed) and very painful for her immediate family. As I remember, she was the apple of everyone’s eye until her late teens when she got into drugs. So sad. The last time I saw her was at a family wedding, she was probably 18 and we spoke only briefly. She was beautiful and kind, but already going down the rocky road. I was hoping to find out some info about her but not much on the internet.”

      –Barbara’s cousin in an email.

Wow. That’s so sad. I bet David lived with guilt over not taking her with him. He probably thought she was safe and ok there.

Yes, he did, Anthony. Those beady lil eyes. He once pulled a gun, allegedly, on one of Barb’s ex boyfriends outside of a pool hall near Sacramento. Killer Karl, the bounty hunter.

I’ve seen two birth dates for Lind, 1938 & 1940 . If this is David Lind, he was held back or failed several grades. Greg Diles graduated at 17. Graduating high school in your early 20’s WOW!

I know my brother.. But nobody has that bridge of the nose. Look at that schnozz. Anyways. I love you all! Just odd that geezer Lind, and con Lind… and high school bully Lind… ALL have the same nostrils. ..and beedy lil eyes.

I have to say, Dave looks pretty rough and haggard to be in his late 40’s early 50’s. I remember seeing that photo of him years ago. I believe this was taken at the first Nash trial. Reminds me of Billy Gibbons of ZZ top without the shades. John I think you’re right. This is David Lind.

I agree. That’s him, man. If the you cover the mouths on the two younger versions with your pinky, the eyes, nose and hair are exactly the same. That’s him….but, holy hell. That pic in the center is almost more menacing than the mug shot. It’s like he was a character in in the 1931 movie, “Reefer Madness”. He’s like the pusher who tries to turn on the soda jerk at the ice cream parlor or somethin’…..Yikes.

When I was a freshman at school, I remember a 19 or 20 yr old guy who was a senior, he kept failing or getting in trouble, suspended etc. This guy dated a freshman chick and he drove a primered and yellow Camaro. I wouldn’t put it past the young Lind to have had a couple stints in juvenile hall either.

Yeah, my feeling is he wasn’t anybody’s dream date for the prom. ❤ I'm sure his mom thought he was sweet once but those eyes scare me……..a lot.

And the Assault with intent to commit rape charge on his rap sheet is a doozie as well. I guess someone saved the woman or the cops showed up? Strange. No wonder Tracy McCourt didnt like him.

    • dreamweaverjenn 7:06 am on July 25, 2013 Permalink | Reply

Who knows? Maybe that WAS his prom date?? I know, that’s mean. He has the kind of eyes you can’t look into for more than a second and you have to turn away. I would have been a nervous wreck around him.

    • localarts 10:51 am on July 25, 2013 Permalink | Reply

I believe the assault with intent to commit rape occurred in 1970, this would have put Lind in his early 30’s.

David Lind, the Aryan Brotherhood and Jerry Brown

There are all kinds of things like this on the web, which lends to the notoriety of the murders and key players. I really do not think the Gang was “widely feared”, nor were they on top of the L.A. drug scene, in my opinion. They were pretty small time. And I’m not sure what to make of the statement that Lind was close to people in the Governor’s office. Jerry Brown would not touch Lind with a ten foot pole. What would be the benefit of knowing Lind?

David Lind was cremated and interred in a mausoleum in Santa Rosa, CA, within the “Friendship Memorial Niche”. I did not call the cemetery to find out what that name means, but this is hardly what happens to a vagabond heroin addict with no family. If he was estranged from his immediate family, then maybe a girlfriend or wife arranged this after he died? Or, was it the Aryan Brotherhood? He lived somewhere…with somebody…

So many questions about him remain unanswered. Post in the comments if you have any info… thanks for visiting.

    **********************************************************

David Clay Lind (b 1940, d. 1995) was perhaps the most famous and yet perplexing member of the Brotherhood. Lind was a member of the widely feared Wonderland Gang, which was brutally extinguished in a quadruple murder in 1981, which has come to be known as the Wonderland Murders. In a move uncharacteristic for a Brother, Lind fully cooperated with police during
their prosecution of pornographic film star Mr. John Curtis Holmes as well as Hollywood impresario Eddie Nash (a.k.a. Adel Nasrallah) from 1982 through 1991. Despite Lind’s cooperation with authorities and testimony in open court, both Holmes and Nash were fully acquitted. Lind died in 1995, from an overdose of heroin.

Lind’s close friendship with persons close to California Governor Jerry Brown’s capitol tends to belie the belief that the Aryan Brotherhood is strictly a criminal organization and not one involved in politics at any level. This contact could be why Lind was let into the witness protection program so easily.
