Day After Nash Robbery, Lind Visits Old Rock Star Friend

Wonderland investigator, Nils Grevillius, interviewed David Lind’s brother and it’s also in the Lind preliminary testimony, that the day before the murders, Lind left Wonderland to go and visit his old buddy, James Fuller, in Monrovia, CA. That’s a good 30 miles away from Wonderland. Jim Fuller was lead guitarist for The Surfaris:

While there at James’ house, Dave says in his testimony that he met a few girls (Cindy and Terri) who gave him a ride back to the San Fernando Valley, where he partied with them all night. The valley is much closer to Wonderland so Dave was working his way back I guess. In the prelim testimony for Holmes’ trial, he does not say they were prostitutes. It does not really matter, but he may have told cops that, or mentioned it at the Nash/Diles trials. The “spending the night with prostitutes in the Valley” thing could be an embellishment by a writer. I don’t know if they were or not. If they were, Big Dave was being tag-teamed while poor Barbara was alone on the couch.

The next morning, Wednesday, July 1, David spoke with the fence, Fat Howard Cook, who knew about the killings and put Dave in touch with Jimmy Arias AKA Mr. Vegas. Then, Mr. Vegas spoke with David and said “Don’t go to the house, everyone is dead”. Mr. Vegas also had a fellow with him named “Paul” (most likely Paul Kelly?). They were to take Ron to the airport for a court date in Sacramento. In the prelim testimony, David never mentions Fat Howard, but Nils says Dave spoke to Fat Howard first, just like in the movie Wonderland.

Anyhow, Nils said that Jim Fuller was in the Surfaris, the surf rock band who did “Wipe Out”. Jim is known as the Godfather of Surf Music:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jim_Fuller_(musician)

His name is on the “Hollywood Rock Walk of Fame”.

David Lind – The High School Years

A few weeks ago, we saw the 1961 senior photo of David Lind at Lodi High School in California. It was deemed “kinda creepy”, by most of the comments we made. And rightfully so. Dave’s age does not match up, but I cannot say that Dave didn’t fail a few grades or spend some time in juvenile hall…and graduate as a 21 year old. Graduating high school was a big deal back then, but so was failing grades. My dad failed 10th grade, mostly for not doing the work and not showing up to school.

I wonder if Dave ran with the greasers or the sosh’s…

    David Lind over the years.

    David Lind over the years.

Well, his junior high school yearbook photo from Lodi High School, is not quite so bad. But, it does look like he’s up to something, like he just took a kid’s lunch money, or that he just forged a note from his mother. He’s planning something!

Wow! Great pictures but who knows? He may have graduated late, maybe he decided to drop out and then went back, he had a later birthday so he was probably a few months older than the other kids to start with. Then if he was held back or dropped out and then dropped back in, great finds either way. I hope NONE of my junior high photos are ever seen. lol

Maybe the other kids thought he was really cool, and if he had a motorcycle, then he’d be like Maxwell Caulfield, the Cool Rider guy from Grease 2.

That’s how I feel about movies that I have seen with loved ones, like mom and dad. My mom took us to see “Flash Gordon” at the Drive Inn once, and it was right before she went MIA on some 18 month party binge bender. Early 80s. I have not seen the film since, it just makes me sad.

Aww, I’m sorry. :( Whenever I feel down about anything, I can usually put in Airplane! and I still crack up at that movie! Watch something that makes you happy <3

Hate to hear that as well. I remember seeing that movie the day it opened in the winter of 1980. The sound track by Queen was pretty good. Throughout your life there will always be certain places and events that are burned into your memory, not because they were necessarily good or bad but because of the external circumstances associated with it, I can think of plenty myself.

    Is This David Lind?

In 1961, a kid named David Lind graduated from Lodi High School. Lodi is located between Sacramento and Stockton, California in the Central Valley.

The age is about right, although I have seen three different birth years for David Clay Lind in my research. Who the heck knows.

What do you think? Here are the few photos of him, along with the ’61 senior yearbook photo. Also, if he was in the Aryan Brotherhood, then Lodi is the place to foster those feelings. To this day, the city is still less than 1% black people by population.

Look at the eyes, eyebrows and the nose, bridge of the nose. Now compare the young Lind’s leftside cheekbone to that of the old, grizzled Lind on the right there… Hmmm. That ear too. WTF!

Call me crazy, but that's him!

Call me crazy, but that could be him.

Yeah, I was feeling he looks a little dark there and maybe a loner. I would love to talk to someone who knew him but I do feel he was a loner. I can just hear his mom now “Davey! Put on that nice suit and tie and comb your hair nice for your senior picture! One day people are going to find this and you want them to see how handsome you are!” lol This of course was before he got in touch with his inner bad ass.

While we’re posting stuff about Dave… I have to include this. I wish he would have taken Barbara with him that night. Who knows, maybe Barbara was sick of his shit and told him to Get Lost?

“She was very pretty and a blonde. I don’t have any photos but will check with fam and see if they have any that I can send. Not sure what the response will be. Her death was kind of hush hush (for obvious reasons details were not discussed) and very painful for her immediate family. As I remember, she was the apple of everyone’s eye until her late teens when she got into drugs. So sad. The last time I saw her was at a family wedding, she was probably 18 and we spoke only briefly. She was beautiful and kind, but already going down the rocky road. I was hoping to find out some info about her but not much on the internet.”

I have to say, Dave looks pretty rough and haggard to be in his late 40′s early 50′s. I remember seeing that photo of him years ago. I believe this was taken at the first Nash trial. Reminds me of Billy Gibbons of ZZ top without the shades. John I think you’re right. This is David Lind.

Robber Describes Holdup At Nash’s Home

Well, since the Mort Downey video is not available yet, I bring you this interesting article from the Nash and Diles trial of 1989.

    * * * * * * * *

ROBBER DESCRIBES HOLDUP AT NASH’S HOME

    January 6, 1989

SANDI GIBBONS, L.A. Daily News Staff Writer

A man who helped rob former nightclub owner Eddie Nash more than seven years ago was the leadoff witness Thursday at a preliminary hearing for Nash and a former bodyguard accused of the 1981 slayings of four people in Laurel Canyon.

Nash, 59, whose real name is Adel Nasrallah, and Gregory DeWitt Diles, 40, are accused of killing the four people on July 1, 1981, in retaliation for the million-dollar robbery at Nash’s former home in Studio City two days earlier.

David Clay Lind, an ex-convict who said he helped rob Nash, testified that the late adult-film star John Holmes set Nash up for the robbery.

Also in on the robbery, he said, were Ronald Launius, 37; William DeVerell, 42; and Tracy McCourt. He said McCourt stayed outside in a getaway car while the others took cocaine, heroin, quaaludes, jewelry, weapons and ”hundreds of thousands of dollars” from Nash on June 29, 1981.

Launius and DeVerell were among the four people bludgeoned to death in a house on Wonderland Avenue in Laurel Canyon. A fifth person, Launius’ wife, Susan, survived the attack and is expected to testify, as is McCourt. Also killed were Lind’s girlfriend, Barbara Richardson, 22, and Joy Audrey Miller, 46.

Holmes, who died of AIDS-related complications last year, was prosecuted for the Laurel Canyon murders, but acquitted in 1982.

A break in the case occurred last year when a former lover of the late entertainer Liberace offered new information, authorities said.

The prospective witness is Scott Thorson, 29, who authorities said talked about the murders after he pleaded guilty last July to a drug-related robbery.

Nash, of Tarzana, and Diles, of Los Angeles, were arrested last Sept. 7.

Lind, an ex-convict and admitted thief and drug dealer from Sacramento, testified that during the robbery at Nash’s house, the former nightclub owner got on his knees and begged for mercy.
At one point, Nash “asked permission if he could say a prayer for ‘my children,’ ” Lind said.
He said the robbers went to Nash’s house after Holmes called and said that only Nash and Diles were there. Holmes left a sliding glass door open for them, he said.

Lind, who said he and the others were armed with pistols, testified that he surprised Diles in the living room of the house as Diles was carrying a breakfast tray to Nash.

As he tried to handcuff Diles, his weapon accidentally discharged, inflicting a powder burn on Diles, Lind testified. At this point, he said, Nash, wearing only his underwear, appeared.

“He thought Mr. Diles had been shot and he was next,” Lind testified.

Lind said the robbers took the loot back to the Laurel Canyon house where they had been living to divide it up. He said he, Launius and DeVerell hid part of the money from Holmes and McCourt so they would get a bigger share for themselves.

Holmes, who Lind described as “weak,” became angry over his share, Lind said.

Defense attorneys contend that the Laurel Canyon murders were committed because of a “falling out among thieves,” not as retaliation for the Nash robbery, which never was reported to police.

Morton Downey, Jr. Show – Still Looking For David Lind

Ok, so I got my hopes up… the adrenaline was pumping!

I sifted through a lot of rubbish today on YouTube looking for it. Man, I hate this show and can see why I did not watch it back in those days. This video only has 40+ views.

Unless David Lind is using an alias here, I’m not sure if he is in this Bounty Hunters episode. I also watched the drugs episode, the porn episode and white supremacist episode… I did not see him in those shows either. Minus commercials, each show was only 45 minutes long. I scanned a list of episodes but could not find another suitable topic that would allow for him being a guest on Morton Downey, Jr. However, there was one episode from March, 1989 that just read “Current Events” (Nash Trial?).  Any ideas? Here is the list of episodes that I was researching… help me out. The Mort show only ran for 2 seasons I think.

That one guy in the cowboy hat sure looks like the few photos I have seen of a fifty-something year old David Lind. Anyways, check out this guy’s profile, he has a ton of Mort videos posted…

Good work John.. You’re getting closer… can almost taste it.. ;)
Unfortunately I don’t think that Stan is our man on account of his NY accent and he doesn’t really look like much of a smack head. Doubt that Lind would come out and promote being a bounter hunter as I suspect he would have wanted to keep a low profile re: his criminal exploits. I guess the reason he came on the show was more to clear his name. Anyway, you’re right though, he kinda does look like him. Funny thing is that Joeb guy from the Ghandi Foundation looks even MORE like Lind. Ha!

Have you thought about contacting the network that produced this series and asking for a copy? I know with news broadcasts you can purchase clips for a small fee but not too sure how you’ll go with a copyrighted/syndicated show. Might be worth a shot eh?

Anyway, it’s great that we have an episode name now, so at least that’s a rock solid lead.. if only there was a season/episode number to go with it! Maybe somebody out there can find a listing of all Morton Downey Jr. Show episodes?.. Would be hugely appreciated.

Although I’ve never seen the episode, a friend of mine has. He said Lind specifically threatens Downey on the air. He said Downey tried to insinuate that David Lind knew the gang was going to be murder that evening and Lind was “conveniently not there” as he put it. He said Lind really came unglued.

I think this interview was done sometime after Nash & Diles were back in the news ( Charged in September 88 or the preliminary hearing Jan of 89, not sure though.

Other Addresses For David Lind & Tracy McCourt

In the past, I had posted a photo of Dave’s last known address in the city where he died. This one below is in Oregon though, and so it goes… not sure if he lived here with a girlfriend, friends or by himself. The last I heard his granddaughter was looking for info on him. He was estranged from his immediate family, I’m told. I guess that I would be too if I got my girlfriend killed like that.

There are also rumors that his involvement as an informant goes waaay beyond Wonderland… although he probably really is dead. I doubt he dropped out of sight into the witness protection program in 1995. However, his remains are interred at an impressive niche at a cemetery in Sonoma County, CA…which is strangely nowhere close to where he died.

Oh well, for what it’s worth. To see the other house in Eureka, use the search button: “Lind Address”.

A lot of credit should go to John for starting this forum, it’s been great. You don’t have to worry about another poster trying to beat you over the head with a 13″ prosthetic dildo when you say somthing negative about Holmes, even though it’s the truth. I’ll say it again, this site makes the IMDB Wonderland forum look bush league.

Pixiecat was a great researcher… I wish she would come back to visit us at the blog. I guess she has been busy with other stuff.

I’m back! I just had to get through a horrible, horrible semester. Now, I’m free and have tons of time for more research (especially since I’m working from home until the fall semester starts). Sorry for dropping off the face of the earth. You have no idea how awful my workload became starting in March.

But all kudos need to go to John! He’s the one with the great blog and all the good info.

Party Girl, Janet, Has More Lines in Movie Than Joy Miller!

That’s a shame really, but Janet is looking pretty cute with her Sheena Easton – 1981 hairstyle. I love her! What other movies has she been in? LOL.

After Josh Lucas, Dylan McDermott was pretty amazing too.

I was reading an article about the first season of American Horror Story and the producers discussed how they knew they wanted McDermott for the part because there is scene where he walks in on the housekeeper masturbating and gets so turned on that he runs into another room and jacks himself off then immediately feels horrible (with his marriage in tatters) and bursts into tears. Apparently he was the only actor up for the part that did not question the masturbation into crying bit.

Sounds like a show that I would accidentally sit down and watch with my mom at Christmas. Ugh. “I thought we were watching Roma Downey in Touched By An Angel” LOL

The actress who played her was at the Wonderland premiere in 2003. It’s the only movie she has ever been in. Check it out, everyone showed up, even the girl who got to “touch it”: http://www.prphotos.com/store/category.cgi?&category=search&query=%5Eevents.sql&q2=Wonderland%20Movie%20Premiere&start=72

And Laurie Holmes was there too, along with a bunch of other porn stars. For some reason, Steve-O is there, acting like himself as usual.

Tess Parker. Not easy to find. I only recognized her by her teeth. She looks so different with longer hair. Can you change your settings so that when I click on a link it opens another screen? I’d prefer that if you can. My sis taught me how but I forget I have not done it in so long.

Joy had those old school clock radios all over the house. I counted 3. So I bet she was a very punctual woman, always on time. 1981 was another world for us now days: back when you had to memorize phone numbers, carry change for pay phones, call the movie theater for showtimes, call people to get directions to their houses. We are so lazy and have it easy today!!

David Lind Takes Witness Stand in 1990 Nash/Diles Trial

He’s got a way with words!

I had somehow missed this article, but it has some great David Lind stuff in it. I wonder if Dave had that Jersey-esque accent and whistled on some of his S’s like Dylan McDermott had portrayed in the movie? I am curious if McDermott heard audio of David while preparing for the role (of a lifetime!).

    Enjoy!

Also, new fans… please don’t forget to use the Search box to find other articles  and posts about the key players in Wonderland. I have posted a ton of stuff on this web site. Thanks for visiting.

    *********************

An admitted participant in the robbery prosecutors believe triggered the murders, Lind took the witness stand for most of last week.

He and a friend went to the Hollywood police station the day after the murders, claiming to know who the killers were.

The tattooed, gray-bearded Lind, 49, was frequently cantankerous and profane. He began many of his courtroom answers with “Try this . . . ,” and finished others with “You got that, pal?”

“We have established I’m not a very nice guy and I lie sometimes,” he said at one point after being questioned about his drug-and-robbery-studded past. But “no matter what I’ve done, I never killed anybody. They did,” he said, pointing to Nash and Diles.

He testified that his memory of events nearly nine years ago is hazy and clouded by drug use.

However, Lind said he does remember his apprehension about the robbery. And the feeling that “the certain type of dope dealer you didn’t rob was Mr. Nasrallah (Nash). It was obvious from the time we got in the house that we were over our heads.”

Lind said that he and the other two men who did the actual robbery cheated Holmes, who planned it, and McCourt, the driver of the getaway car, out of their fair share of the loot.

The witness said he had been staying at the Wonderland Avenue house, but did not come home the night before his girlfriend, Richardson, and the others were killed. He testified that he stayed with a prostitute at a San Fernando Valley motel and then lingered to transact several drug deals. He said a friend called him with news of the slayings.

“He said, ‘Everybody’s dead, don’t go to the house.’ “

That call came from Jimmy Arias a.k.a Mr. Vegas, this was the guy that showed up the morning of the murders to put Ronnie on a plane to Sacramento for his court date.

        Yes! great info.

          agreed!

        • John 2:27 pm on April 10, 2013 Permalink

I’m just confused why someone cared so much about Ronnie’s legal problems. I guess he was of value to Mr. Vegas and was Ron was needed to help run things?

    • localarts 3:45 pm on April 10, 2013 Permalink | Reply

Arias may have been a bail bondsman, just a theory.

      • John W 4:00 pm on April 10, 2013 Permalink | Reply

Right on. Makes perfect sense. Especially if Rob’s poor mom had put up her hard earned money.

        • John W 10:54 am on April 14, 2013 Permalink

Oops… “Ron’s mother”, but it was probably an unsecured bond, no collateral. I am mistaken, because I doubt Ron called Bett to get him bail after he was caught driving the stilen car in Sacramento. I wonder if he wouldve faced any jailtime for this.
