    What Happened To Helen Hennessy?

Special thanks to PixieCat for providing research and info. I could not have made this blog post without her.

Stop by Find A Grave and give Helen Hennessy some Love.

    *  *   *   *   *   *   *   *   *   *  *

I didn’t know Helen, but I know the time when she was growing up ….. people like to look back at time nostalgically or, as the opposite, forget what it was like to grow up during that period and make crass generalizations about a person’s life. I look at it from the point that we all have a story to share.

Helen’s story was repeated in every state throughout the country in the seventies. The anti-romanticizing of “Dazed and Confused”. Growing up during this era was bittersweet, when one thinks back to what it was really like. And two of the best examples in film are the movies “Foxes” with Jodie Foster and “Over The Edge” starring Matt Dillon. Some kids would die, and some would live to somehow move on with their lives.

Now, let’s get into the story of finding out the truth about Helen.

    *  *   *   *   *   *   *   *   *   *  *

Last year, I did a blog post on the death of Anissa Jones. She was a child star on the late 60s, early 70s show, A Family Affair. She died at 18 of a drug overdose in 1976. You can read that blog post here.

When Anissa died, nearly every news article published the name of 14 year-old Helen Hennessy, whose house Jones had overdosed at in Oceanside, CA. This type of thing would not happen today, where the news media publishes the name of a minor, and also includes her age and address. Helen even did an interview with National Enquirer.

The two girls hardly new each other and had only met a few weeks ago. The police report and the ensuing investigation was also a circus. There were a dozen kids at the house the next day, most of them showed up after Anissa’s body was found. Due to this frenzy of not knowing what to do, the cops were not called for some time, so whether they knew or did not know she was dead, that is because these were just kids, in over their heads, indulging in a lifestyle they should not even be close to.

Helen's old house at 2312 Littler Lane in Oceanside, CA. Four beds/3 baths, built in 1974. 2,500 sq ft. Last sold in 1994.

    What happened to Helen Hennessy?

It is hard to track down and piece together exactly what happened to Helen later in her life. Internet rumors abound. Some say she worked in the restaurant industry, was a self-employed entrepreneur, while others say that she was a stripper, drug addict and porn star. Rubbish. From what I found, she led a normal life and even ran a few of her own businesses. However, I did hear that she was quite the party animal as an adult. Helen was into sports cars, nightlife and fast living.

People on message boards who are from Oceanside, CA offer their eyewitness testimony that Helen attended Ocean Shores High School. It’s not a regular high school like Oceanside, but more of a smaller continuation school for kids with academic, drug or other issues. There is zero tolerance there for absences, behavioral issues, etc. It just goes to show you how messed up that area was with drugs, teen discipline, single parent homes and stuff like that in the 1970s. Ocean Shores also does not have a yearbook, at least not in the 70s. I had to do some digging on my own to find a photo of this forgotten tragic figure from the Anissa Jones story.

    Finding Helen.

In my research, I find that a Helen Hennessy attended Fallbrook High School as a freshman in 1976. Fallbrook is 17 miles from Helen’s house in Oceanside. I am told by a former classmate, Lisa, that Helen’s extended family had a home or ranch in Bonsall, just down the street from Fallbrook on Highway 76. Lisa was in Helen’s homeroom class. She says Helen was pretty and kind and just a regular girl.

16.8 miles. Helen's father was also a fireman at Camp Pendleton. He could have gotten a transfer to the north base, just west of Fallbrook High.

16.8 miles. Helen’s father was also a fireman at Camp Pendleton.

Anissa Jones died in August of ’76 and Helen was to be a freshman at Oceanside High the next month. However, one would think that her single-parent father transferred her up there to Fallbrook to avoid the scrutiny and treatment by the teachers and kids at school. And to get her away from some bad seeds that sprang up in her life. What else could he do? She was 14! I can imagine him being quite protective of his daughter, like most would, especially during the drug riddled teen culture boom of the 1970s. It was a big reality check. Her dad, Frank, also twice sued individuals in San Diego County for fender benders that occurred while Helen was driving her car in the late seventies.

Take a video tour of Fallbrook High School. It has a beautiful outdoor campus.

There are no known photos of Helen on the web. Until today. She was said to be pretty and blonde. It’s true. I found a photo of Helen Hennessy in the 1976 Fallbrook yearbook. Most school photos are taken shortly after the school year begins. Yes, this is her, and you can almost see the sadness in her eyes. None of the other kids have that forlorn look in their eye. What happened to Anissa was a traumatic experience for any kid to go through. She doesn’t look very happy here to me.

The reason I know it is her, is because Helen does not show up in subsequent yearbooks at Fallbrook, and how many Helens could there be in a 20-mile radius of Oceanside. One. And thus, after this school year, Helen pretty much drops off the face of the Earth until her marriage and death… 20 years later.

Her parents divorced in 1970 and her father died in 1985. He was 62 years old.

Helen Kathleen Hennessy. She was only at Fallbrook for freshman year. Then, did she go to Ocean Shores Continuation School? Post here if you know.

Post here if you know anything about her.

She was married in 1994 – Las Vegas:

    Helen’s Last Years.

In about 1993, Helen and Kenneth Brown moved to the big island of Hawaii, where it is unknown exactly what the couple did there, but they used P.O. boxes and an LLC was filed using her name in 1993-94… the “Hennessy Sports Bar”. Calling around and asking local business owners in the town of Keaau, provided no leads. The Chamber of Commerce also could not help me. That’s not surprising, as it was a long ass time ago. In the 90s, there was an anticipated real estate “boom” on the big island of Hawaii, but it never materialized and many investors lost money.

Helen died three years later in a tragic auto accident, apparently while she and a girlfriend were T-boned at 55 mph while making a U-turn on the very dangerous Keaau-Pahoa Road, which leads south from the larger city, Hilo, into the semi-rural suburbs of Keaau and Pahoa. Google that road, it’s very treacherous and there are a lot of DUIs and fatalities there per capita. This wreck was alcohol related, as this particular accident is listed in Hawaii’s drunk driving statistics for that year (stating that alcohol was involved, and that these two women had been drinking). The 38 year-old woman with her, Cynthia Painter, is listed as Person #1 (driver) and she also died. In 1996, there was an increase in DUI fatalities in Hawaii. The DUI limit in Hawaii in 1996 was .08 BAC.

    Hwy 130, or Keaau-Pahoa Road.

Hwy 130, or Keaau-Pahoa Road on the windward and less touristy side of Hawaii’s big island.

The two women crashed and died on a Saturday at about noon. Conditions were dry on that two-way blacktop highway. It looks like the 73 year-old man that hit them was with two other people, either friends or family, but none of them were seriously injured. Had the girls really been out bar hopping and drinking that early in the day? Blood-alcohol levels taken from the pair must have told the real truth. Lots of questions, few answers.

I attempted to track down Painter’s husband, Craig Painter, but the attorney I found who represented him in a separate case, did not return my inquiries. I cannot obtain the police accident report because Hawaii only releases info like that to next of kin, and you would be lucky to get it even then. There is a really antiquated civic infrastructure on the big island, even when I called agencies and businesses, it seemed like I was waking them from their slumber. Almost nothing is online. I read that this is because the state and local governments have little money to put things like this online for citizens. It’s not like here on the mainland, where every Sheriff’s Department or obscure state agency has a big fancy web site. It is the same way with the cemeteries in Hawaii, so I cannot even find out if these two women were buried there.

So then, why was Helen living there?

Did Helen have her own money? Did her husband’s family have money? There is a legacy family of “Browns” that live in Hawaii. Was Kenneth related? But again, I had trouble finding relatives connected to him. Ken is still alive, and I think that he lives in Florida these days, but I have not been able to make contact. Interestingly, there is a man with the same name from San Diego County, CA who had quite a long rap sheet in the 80s and 90s. The last arrest being before they appear on public record in Hawaii. The windward side of the big island of Hawaii is a good place to hide out, if you had to. Nobody would find you there.

If Helen was a stripper, as these foolish internet rumors persist, then there aren’t and never were many, if any strip joints in Hilo. I could find nothing. Hilo is also quite small. If Hilo was on the mainland, it would not be anything to get excited about. Further south where they lived, there really isn’t much in Keaau or Pahoa either, just rustic looking homes and a few stores and restaurants. There is no porn or adult industry there, so those porn star rumors about Helen make no sense. There are a lot of drugs in that area however, and that part of the island is known as the Wild West. Except for the resort area of Kona on the leeward side, the economy on the big island was never booming, and you can tell from Google Street View. It’s almost like you are in a small Louisiana town or any rural place in the southern United States. It’s very remote. There is a lot of petty crime there, drug use and unemployment. Crystal meth is very popular, just as it is in many parts of mainland USA. I read an article recently where kids growing up there say they feel trapped and they feel they are living in the middle of nowhere. It appears that Hawaii is not all that it is cracked up to be.

Please post a comment to this article if you know anything about Helen Kathleen Hennessy-Brown.

    Thank you.

I mean no disrespect here….but i’m a little confused. Why is this Helen Hennessy so important that people who didn’t even know her would be inquiring about her all these years later?

Thanks. I would like to see them and I promise not to post them. I did find that in the late 80s/early 90s, there was a Kenneth A. Brown (her husband?) who had quite a long rap sheet in San Diego County, after his final arrest in the early 90s, he pretty much disappears from that area. This could be when they moved to the big island of Hawaii. Back in the early 90s, one could probably hide out pretty well there, if wanted by the police on the mainland.

I also talked to a girl from her freshman year homeroom class. She remembered her, and said that she was pretty and kind and just a regular girl. Her family owned some land or a ranch nearby because the girl’s father did some work there for his business. It was in Bonsall and Helen lived there during freshman year. She lived within walking distance to Hwy 76, I’m told.

I don’t know what happened to Helen but Pahoa on the Big Island is not really a nice place to live. They call it the ” wild west “. It is not a small town. It covers a large area and the land is super cheap ( for Hawaii ) but there are a lot of ” farmers ” and one wrong turn could get you killed. It is drug invested – very few ” normal ” girls from the mainland end up in Keeau. I think Helen had a hard life and was an meth addict and Pahoa is a place you can grow what you want, cook what you want and shoot up what you want. The neighbors stay out of everyone else’s business. I will also say that I had several friends OD on drugs back in the 80’s when I was a teenager. We did what we could and then called 911 for help. No one died. What happened to Anissa Jones was a tragedy. Very few people pass away totally silent. I think everyone knew she was in trouble and chose instead to go rob her apartment. Sick.

The House on Littler Lane – The Death of Anissa Jones

Blog Note:  Go HERE to read the police report.

    *********************************************

They say that the weather in southern California is awesome, quite possibly the best anywhere on Earth. But, when the sun goes down and movie stars and celebrities begin to play, anything can happen. There is simply no place for the dirty laundry or hard truths to hide, for they are right out in the open at daybreak. That goes for washed up actors and former child stars as well. It happens all too often. This case, though, is a bit different. It was one of the first shocking deaths of a former child star. This was Buffy.

Photo credit - Kathy Garver's book "Surviving Cissy"

Photo credit – Kathy Garver’s book “Surviving Cissy”

The story of Anissa Jones, former star of the series “Family Affair” is no less strange or bizarre than anything that has ever happened to Hollywood. This sad episode occurred in 1976 and is still being discussed on internet forums and discussion boards by her die hard fans and admirers. The tale is wrought with mystery, who-dun-its, and cries of foul play. The authorities called it an accidental death, and it looked like a case of teens partying too much, and a young girl overdosed. Case closed…sounds simple enough. Or was it? Let’s take a look at the evidence, societal issues and the drug culture of the 1970s.

Anissa (pron. uh-NEE-sa) was 18 when she died of a massive drug overdose at a female friend’s house party in Oceanside, CA in 1976. The 2,500 square foot, four bedroom home was newly built in 1974. It was last on the market in 1994, so no interior photos are available.

There are many questions, and few answers in Anissa’s passing. It was this story that shocked Americans most during the year of our Bicentennial. I was 7 years old, and I still remember my mother telling me about it. I remember feeling really confused. I guess I thought the girl in that show was still a little kid. She was and she wasn’t.

The only recent publicity this story has received was on E’s True Hollywood Story in the mid-90s. That said, it was an episode some say was marred with errors and needless accusations. The mother was blamed, the father got off the hook, whatever. The show was poorly researched and relied on few witnesses as to the home life of Anissa and her brother, Paul. We cannot look at “E” to solve this for they had their chance.

The real answers lay with what people who lived in her neighborhood had seen, people who knew Anissa, her friends, acquaintances, classmates, kids in her beach and L.A. subculture, local area druggies, etc. After that data is gleaned and filtered, everything comes out in the wash, believe me. It was a simple drug overdose by a girl that lived fast and died tragically. But first, let’s look at the rest of the story.

This donut shop used to be Winchells, and Anissa worked here in 1975. 8139 W. Manchester, Playa Del Rey.

This donut shop used to be Winchells, and Anissa worked here in 1975. 8139 W. Manchester, Playa Del Rey.

    SUICIDE?

Anissa had recently bought birth control pills, was with friends non-stop, rented a beach house in San Diego, and she had made some long-term business and financial arrangements. That is hardly the premeditated behavior of a person about to commit suicide. Suicide is out as cause of death as far as I am concerned.

A YOUNG DRUG CULTURE AND RAMPANT DIVORCE

Let’s face it. The seventies were the golden age of divorce and a massive increase in single-parent families. My parents divorced in 1975. Few families on our street had both parents. It’s pretty sad, and it tore me up at age 5.

Without proper supervision, kids and young teens ran wild. After the failed summer of love and all the promise of a new world, hippie madness, the only thing leftover was Rock-n-Roll and the bitter taste of broken families, street drugs, and this was everywhere. Watch the movie, Foxes, starring Jodie Foster to get the idea. It came out 3 years after Anissa’s death, but you’ll definitely pick up the vibe. That movie is hauntingly familiar to me.

In the early seventies, Richard Nixon had just ramped up his big drug campaign and this was just a few years before Anissa’s death. Things were bad and it would get worse before it got better. Young adults, teens and kids could get drugs just about anyplace. Anissa’s place to get prescription drugs, Quaaludes, Seconals (uppers/downers) was from an elderly Dr. Feelgood in Torrance, California.

September 26, 1976. He was also cited for speeding once in 1951: Going 45 in a 30mph zone. LOL. I stumbled across that while searching for this.

September 26, 1976. He was also cited for speeding once in 1951: Going 45 in a 30 mph zone. LOL. I stumbled across that while searching for this.

Enter one Dr. Don Carlos Moshos. He had but a short time to live due to a terminal illness and he wanted to leave a bigger nest egg for his family. Cops said he generated something like $500,000 in less than a year peddling his prescription dope. Since his office ran their own pharmacy or dispensary it was easy, he was selling anything to anyone over 18 who could pay the $15 fee. You pay for the doctor’s visit and you get some pills. It was similar to today’s pill mills I am sure. Anissa would also get cocaine and PCP from the local drug dealers in her neighborhood in Playa Del Rey.

Dr. Moshos office at 1617 Cravens Ave in Torrance, CA. The kids would actually line up outside to get their pills.

THE NIGHT ANISSA DIED AND THE AFTERMATH

Ten or twelve kids were at the house at various times during the party or after Anissa’s body was found. That is in the police report. What is also there, is that one of the girls was 12 years old. Talk about starting to party at a young age- that will just about do it! Here are some facts from the police report:

    • Although a bizarre end, the cops ruled this an accidental death due to overdose. I agree.
    • The party goers or those present (guys and girls) ranged in age from 12 to 22 years old.
    • A few neighborhood kids showed up after she was dead but before the EMTs, just to gawk or check out the scene. They were in the house.
    • One boy gave a false name, only to fess up later saying he was just scared.
    • One girl’s parents came over right away and whisked away their daughter, only to have to explain this later to the cops.
    • The 22-year-old man was not at the party. He was a drug dealer in Anaheim. The kids called him to find out what to do. He allegedly drives the 2 or so hours to Oceanside. This is quite bizarre.
    • One boy borrowed Anissa’s car to go back to Anissa’s apartment in Playa Del Rey to get the rest of the drugs before they were confiscated. He said he was going to breakfast.
    • The host of the party was a 14-year-old girl who lived at the house with her divorced father. This girl died at age 34 in a car accident collision in Keaau, Hawaii in 1996. Another woman died in the car with her. The people in the other car survived. Keaau-Pahoa Road is a short but dangerous highway, south of Hilo on the big island. Helen was married in 1994. She was survived by her husband who now lives on the mainland. You can read more about Helen here.
Helen Hennessy. Fallbrook High School. 1976. It is the only year she attended that school. After that... nobody knows.

One of the last known photos of Anissa

Anissa died between 2-4am, was found nude by her friend, but was found wearing boxer shorts and no shirt when the emergency crew arrived. The police/fire crew were not called until about noon the next day. Death photos have never surfaced online and I hope they never do. Anissa’s body was found so full of drugs that the coroner called it “the most massive overdose I have ever seen”. Anissa was 18-years-old, barely 5’ tall and weighed 90 lbs, and she had been doing drugs all day.

Anissa was survived by her mother and her beloved brother, Paul. Paul later died in 1984 of a drug overdose, likely from a heart attack due to cocaine abuse. His mother, now all alone, kept his last empty pack of Marlboro Red cigarettes as a keepsake. Her babies were all gone. And now, Anissa’s immediate family are all dead and gone too. Anissa would have been in her mid-50’s today in 2012. She had no funeral and her body was cremated, her ashes were spread at sea. She left her family over $150,000 in cash and assets.

    Rest in Peace. The End.

Rigamortis takes 2 to 6 hours to set in. It starts at the neck and the jaw and proceeds.
At approximately 3 a.m., Anissa went into Helen’s room and they conversed for a bit. They both then went back to sleep. It was stated that Anissa could hardly walk at this point. So if we’re going to say that rigor mortis takes 2 to 6 hours to set in, and it was only in the beginning stages she had to have passed away sometime maybe around 7 or 8 in the morning? I am not a doctor I am just surmising. The gentleman that she was getting high with all day, Butch koven, was very hard to awaken the next morning. I am wondering if somebody had tried to awaken Anissa whether that would have saved her life.
I also was reading the autopsy and police reports and was struck by how love the cocaine level was. It was literally traces. I also wonder what happened to the 12 year old. I am wondering if that was the one who was whisked off before everything really got started. And I wonder why these teenagers would want to be bothered with a twelve-year-old anyway.

I think that everyone there that night should have been taken into custody and had some kind of sentence. 12-21 anyone involved . They should somehow have paid instead of getting a slap on the hand but some met their fate and died young and some couldn’t live with themselves for it and killed them selves.

The death scene photos were sent to our dad who was putting together the definitive investigation of her death many years ago while the police and first responders were still alive. One of his employees got into a war with the trolls and in anger posted the pictures without my dad’s permission. Many people were very upset and they were removed. To the best of my knowledge no one made copies. My dad destroyed the photos that were sent to him. Supposedly some one tried to have the photos released by a public information request but were told the files were no longer available. The photos were very sad and hopefully Paula never saw them!

Hey, I want to personally thank all that have posted on here! I really do appreciate it. I was a huge fan of Family Affair when I was a child. I loved Anisa Jones. Thought she was the luckiest girl on earth too! I thought as a child that she was very rich. I used to imagine myself being friends with her, you know I was a child. Of course the reality was far different.

You are so correct about illegal, and prescription drugs, Steve. They are all no damned good. The Anissa Jones story would make for such a good movie, but would cost a whole lot of money. They could find look alike to act the different parts, and even use clips from Family Affair. I have a very bad feeling that things, especially photos, and such. were thrown away in the garbage because there was nobody left alive to carry on the family name. What a damned shame. I know that nowadays, all kinds of great items, and valuables, ends up in trash dumpsters, and it is not only the rich, and famous, but regular people, who are so damned wasteful, and selfish. Even money, and jewelry gets thrown away. Landlords, and hotel/ motel employees do this every day. In the case of Anissa Jones, it is all the more sad. There is nothing left, and the two people that my parents knew, who knew the Jones family, are long dead, along with my parents as well. My mother babysat Anissa at least once, and met her family through Lou, and Harold Blomseth. I believe Lou was the godmother of Anissa. Those are the two people I was referring to above. They are dead now. If they were still alive, they would be in their 90’s. If Lou had not broken her hip from a fall at some Beach City restaurant, she would have lived longer than she did. Another strange thing is my last name, and I do not mean my maiden name. Guess what it is? Who would have ever thought? Too bad Lou is died long before I married. Anyway, it would be great if some screen writer/ producer could make a movie called ‘ The Anissa Jones Story’, or something to that effect. In one of the photos that was posted, I noticed an extremely good looking young boy, and I believe that was the brother of Anissa, even though I have never met, nor known him, Anissa, or the parents. Life is so horribly short, and all we are is dust in the wind. Everything is dust in the wind.

Anissa’s mother refused to be interviewed for the E! True Hollywood Story, but I think she is the one who provided the family photos used in the show. In the credits, Paula is given a “special thanks” credit. I guess we should be thankful that we got to see those pictures of Anissa as a teen, since we don’t know who has them now.

I was actually named after Anissa Jones….my father who died a couple years ago went to school with her and had dated her for a little while…paul wiseman, he also had a son, my brother, who he named jon paul wiseman…i just recently found some of these things out which has astonished and baffled me all at the same time. I heard this from my father’s ex girl friend from 7th grade who i am in contact with. She says that anissa was the only person she felt threatened by and that they were very fond of each other. how crazy and sad that she had such a tragic death.

I’ve been through the Network 54 forum and another offshoot. Where are all of the pictures that Jerome refers to? Certainly these must be posted somewhere as he was emailing them by request in 2007 and 2008. i read that there are many photos on Classmates.com but don’t know how to access with my account.

The pictures my dad actually posted are still available on photobucket http://s38.photobucket.com/user/Markus_M_2008/library/?sort=3&page=1

He never posted the death photos, that was an employee who was thoroughly sick of the nastie’s. When my dad found out that they had been leaked he removed them and burned the copies that had been sent to him (this was while Paula was still alive.) Be careful of who posts as Jerome or JSL at Network 54 as few of the posts there are from him. Many of those posts were made after my dad’s death!

I’d be rather cautious about anything coming from Network54, as the Anissa forum there seems to be dominated by a caustic little troll who hides behind the “Anonymous” moniker. Some ‘skilled’ friends of mine did some looking into this person and found many coincidences with other IDs there, especially with some psycho named Michael Ashworth…as well as another, who seems to like to go by “Amanda Anissa Lovell” on Facebook, but is really Amanda Joleen Lovell, who was reported as missing in Winder, GA in late 2016 and reported as a ‘schizophrenic’ in dire need of medication. Explains a lot.

Carol, that is why this case was so intriguing to me. There is really nothing left, just a few old photos. No family, that I know of. I don’t think there are even any gravestones for her mother, her brother. Anissa was no longer in the public eye when she died, and so the case pretty much faded away from the public, at least until the E True Hollywood Story episode was relased in the mid/late 90s.

Hi John, so you believe her mother has passed away? Have you tried to locate a death certificate for her? It seems that if she has died that she would have left a will and her property would have passed to whomever she named in the will. Would the California court system-recorder of wills have the records? It seems hard to believe that there were no aunts, uncles, or cousins to Anissa and Paul. Also, is there any way to see the E true hollywood story on Anissa?

Don’t know about relatives, surely there are a few. Not sure if Paula died in California but she did live in the Rees house for a very long time. Back in the mid-’70s, I also had friends who were from single-parent families, torn by custody battles, parental bickering, poverty and even at least one parent with a substance-abuse issue. That is an environment no child should ever have to fear, let alone endure. It’s devastating, and while most make it out alive, very few make it out into a relatively productive and happy existence. It’s heartbreaking to consider that Anissa was scooped up, exalted and then dumped by Hollywood without so much as a “thank you and goodbye”, even if it was for her fame helping them make money. In the end, Hollywood killed every member of the Jones family.

I was almost 10 when Anissa died and never read about it until seeing it in a book somewhere in the ’80s. My heart broke so much, I was 3 when I first saw and fell for her: CBS just started showing “Family Affair” as reruns in “CBS Daytime”, the episode “Buffy” was the first I ever saw. In reality, I still had about 8 weeks left to ‘bake’ when “Family Affair” debuted and was born 28 minutes before the episode “Who’s Afraid of Nural Shpeni?” first aired. But even at 3, my heart was hers. It’s sappy and all, but not an uncommon story for kids & celebrities. I knew I’d always wanted to meet her, say “Hi” and *maybe* get an autograph…maybe it was for the best it never happened. She’d had a lot of problems by then, I’m sure seeing a 9-year-old boy trotting up to her with visions of “Buffy” would’ve been a turn-off for her, knowing now how repulsed Anissa had become of the association.

I wish life could’ve been far different for them all. They could’ve been happier than they ended up, but that’s Hollywood. Everyone deserved far better, especially Anissa and Paul. My hope is that wherever they are today, they’ve got it better than they did here…and that they’re together and that all’s sorted out.

Knowing some old-time celebrities myself, the reason that you won’t see too much about Anissa on Youtube, etc., is quite easy to speculate about…

        Her loved ones are dead.

Friends and family are the number one source for dead mid-level and low-level celebrities’ videos. Who else would have collected the films of those commercials, transferred them to VHS in the 1980s, transferred them to DVDs in the 1990s and then uploaded them to Youtube in 2008?

Maybe an aunt, uncle or cousin inherited her mother’s belongings when she died. (I can’t remember if she’s in an old-folks home or is dead now, so that may be a moot point.) Maybe a relative of an old agent of hers might have something… Something that they might not think is desired or valued but is. There’s a great story about an old rock star who committed suicide and left a trunk full of tapes behind. Relatives were never going to do anything with them and turned them over to a biographer who was also a producer. He shined them up and turned it into 5 CDs of material, used them as part of a book and it all led to a Behind the Music program on VH1.

I doubt, based on the family’s substance abuse issues, anyone else in the family is bright enough to have collected such memorabilia.

I would love for one of Helen’s nieces to send me the whole scoop about her life. For Anissa… it’s even more sad. Her loved ones are all dead. Thanks for responding. There is a dearth of information about Anissa’s death and I appreciate your detailed research presented. I can’t find anything on Allan “Butch” Koven. Would love to hear from people who were there that night or friends of Anissa’s at the time. I’ve read a few comments on the internet from people claiming to be such, but they never have details or solid proof.
Still getting conflicting reports that Anissa was either 1) happy to leave show business when Family Affair ended or 2) upset that she could not get jobs bc Directors and casting agents thought audience wouldn’t accept her in “non-Buffy” roles. Like supposedly she was rejected for the role of Regan in the Exorcist for this reason. (Again, conflicting info. that either she didn’t care or she was highly upset.)
Ironic as Linda Blair was stereotyped after The Exorcist and her career went (basically) nowhere.

Anissa did NOT want to do the Exorcist or any other acting job after Family Affair. She was so happy when it was over. She went to audition, because mommy was chomping at the bit over what she heard would be a big movie. Anissa didn’t care, & made that clear to producers of “The Exorcist”, so they let it go. Her agent knew this. I think they were just humoring Mom with the “audition”

I agree. I own a Harry Langdon film negative of Anissa (of which I also bought the copyright) with her dressed as Buffy, and she appears to be about 14. There were various reports which suggest that mother Paula tried hard to capitalize on the Buffy image after Family Affair ended, but that can’t be proven. Anissa seems to have this “Let’s get this over with” smile on her face, I’m just not sure.

I believe that Helen and Anissa had met that summer at either a retirement community where their grandparents lived, or something like that. It was that or some type of resort with cabins. Someplace SE of LA. I read that somewhere. Also, they did not know each other that well. The vibe I get is just that Anissa and Helen were becoming friends, but also that Anissa was Helen’s babysitter, and then she died the first night. She was to stay there all week. Anissa’s boyfriend was Butch Koven. He is still around, but most of the kids involved that night/day were pretty traumatized, and so obviously aren’t talking to people like me LOL. RIP Anissa and Helen.

I live just over 2 miles from the Littler Lane home and, the evening of March 10 (eve of her 55th birthday) I decided to Google her… Weird coincidence that was! I drove by the home on her birthday. Though in Southern California, the neighborhood vibe is 1950s Vegas (i.e. Ottawa Drive, Las Vegas). Really dank vibe on the whole street. I guess, in 1972 (their construction year) they appealed to old men.

The vibe Anissa put out is pretty enthralling. Reality sucks.

By the way 4’10 and 88 lbs is not bad. My legally-betrothed is 40, two kids, 5’6 and 98 lbs. Good diet and healthy living – No exercise but a once-every-two-weeks bike ride to the beach.

I, for one, wouldn’t mind seeing death-scene photos. I’d also like to see pictures of that Helen character too.

The day Anissa died and Dr Moshos’ name appeared in the paper, my mother screamed. Dr Moshos was set up to deliver my parents’ first baby in 1950. He barely examined her. My mother was in labor for over 24 hours when Dr Moshos forced a vaginal birth. It crushed the baby’s head and killed her. My mother never really got over that trauma.

‘Down to 88’? According to the coroner, Anissa was a “well-developed, well-nourished Caucasian female” and for her height of four-foot-ten, it’s a reasonable weight. People tended to be skinnier back in the ’70s.

How awful for their poor mother. Two children dead in the prime of their lives. The girl who was the resident of the home wasn’t the porn star Savannah, was she? She died in the 90s, and lived with a divorced father. That was another really interesting E True Hollywood Story; if you ever get the chance to check it out, I highly recommend it.

Why was Anissa found nude/half nude?

It does sound like an accidental overdose to me too, but those kids were really stupid in their behavior after her death. I guess I’ll chalk it up to age and immaturity. Those Dr. Feelgood types are still rampant in LA today. I’ve, uhm, known some people who have visited those doctors. They’re very easy to find.

I have seen the Savannah E – THS episode… interesting! Her bio states Savannah was born in 1970, making her younger than myself…but good observation. For a minute I was thinking this was solved!

The girl was named Helen Hennessey…not sure about last name spelling but I think that’s it… see what you can do with that search if you want… I’m at a dead end finding her info. I did find that her brother runs a finance mgmt company and she was listed as his deceased sister on some legal documents he had posted. Strange case. Some have said she was a stripper in the San Fran area…others that she lived in Hawaii and did some porn. BTW, all of Anissa’s friends are were extremely hot 70s SoCal babes (from the pics I’ve seen….not that you care LOL). Thanks for reading it!!

Recently, I came across Anissa’s death report, completed in both typewriter and added handwritten amendments, by Coroner Robert Creason. Helen Hennessy came up early in the report and the one notation which stands out is that, by Helen’s name on Page 2, is a handwritten addition: “Who seemed to be proud a “TV” person died in her house. She told me that.” (ad verbatim) Haunting to this day about how cold and morbid Anissa’s ‘friends’ were.

The E! True Hollywood Story of Anissa has been critically panned by family, friends and others as being too inaccurate, too hastily assembled. It’s largely rejected by the fandom community as a result.

Dr. Don Carlos Moshos was the doctor who prescribed the Seconal to Anissa: he was dying and decided to sell drugs illegally to pad his estate for his family’s well-being. Shortly before Anissa’s death, police were investigating Moshos’ business undercover, amid reports that he was selling drugs to the local kids for a small exam fee, as well as dispensing the drugs at his office. The police were stunned to see kids literally lined up around the block to get their fixes from Moshos.

Moshos was arrested days after Anissa’s death due to a smoking-gun envelope found by Anissa’s body: the envelope had his printed name & address, as well as the handwriting showing the med, quantity, dosage and Jones’ last name. The drug turned up in the toxicology report, and among the eleven charges laid upon Moshos was a charge for 2nd degree murder, which was dropped shortly before Christmas of 1976. The reason why the charge was dropped was because Moshos died on December 28, 1976…exactly 4 months after Anissa.

Anissa’s surviving family sued Moshos’ estate for $400K, and a judge ruled him 30% liable in 1979 and awarded Paula and Paul only just under $80K.

What people aren’t seeing here is Anissa was 18 Helen was 15. Anissa was a bad influence on Helen and supplied her with many substances. The hennessys family was never peaceful after the death of Alissa. My mother stated that the harassment from the junior high she was unable to finish her schooling.

To have two children, both of them die of overdoses would indicate to me, there were problems within the family. The mother was an alcoholic and had a contentious relationship with her daughter, who spent a lot of time in and out of Juvenile Detention during her mid-teens. I don’t feel sorry for the mother.

Helen married and moved to Kauai, I was told that there was the thought of going into a business there. She apparently had a problem with drugs (initially marijuana) from early on. She met Anissa at her Grandmother’s house at Laguna (Anissa told the Juvenile Court Magistrate that she did not want to return to her mother’s at that time because her mother was too strict.) Helen was staying nearby and they met and bonded. Helen’s father Frank (who was a Federal Firefighter stationed at Fallbrook (the back gate of Pendelton)) met with Anissa and asked Anissa to stay with Helen (in mid-August 1976) believing her to be a good influence on the younger girl. He was wrong.

No, not the home of a porn star. Helen Hennessy was the only female resident of the home and was 14. Certain laws would be seriously broken if that was true.

I too remember the E-true Hollywood story but never hear much about this case. Such a sad tragic story. What you wrote about the single parent families in the 70s hits pretty close to home. My mom married 4 times (4 times really is a charm). I never went to the same school for more than part of a year until jr. high and I do not acknowledge my biological father. Only dads 3 and 4 are significant to my life. (cry me a river, I know.) With that said I can see pretty clearly what she might have been running from. Also if you read Brett Easton Ellis’ book Less than Zero, you can get a feel for how empty the single parent family homes feel up into the teen years and beyond.

There is no possibility Helen Hennessy and Savannah are the same person. She died at age 22 I think. Of a self inflicted gunshot to the head. (Savannah)

Good observation. It is unlikely she worked in porn, but who knows. Helen was married in 1994. She died in a drunk driving accident in Hawaii in 1996. Another woman died in the car with her. The 3 people in the other car all survived.
